Modern Combat 5: Blackout is a first person shooter, and the fifth in Gameloft's series. The game takes place in Tokyo, and allows the player to take the role of a security force member named Phoenix.

It's important to judge Modern Combat 5 for what it is, rather than what it is not. While it certainly has all the trappings that one would expect from a game like Call of Duty, this isn't a Triple A game. Instead, this is more of a stripped down, mobile-first title. If you judge the game simply by what it is, you'll find quite a bit to like. The game allows players to take on several different squad roles, play in several different game modes, and even allows for a fantastic multiplayer experience. Judging the game on its own merits will allow you to get a great deal of joy out of the game.

There are, as ever, a few issues that keep the game from being perfect. As stated above, it really goes out of its way to try to compete with bigger, fuller-featured games and suffers from that. Even with the inevitable comparisons ignored, there's also the fact that the controls are pretty awful. You can tell the game was developed for mobile, and the somewhat stuttering controls will frustrate anyone who is used to dealing with the precision necessary for good FPS play.

Modern Combat 5 may not hang with the big names, but it's still a good shooter. It suffers from requiring players to play only online, and it certainly has bad controls. If you can get past that, though, you'll find an enjoyable shooter with great multiplayer action.
